Few people have seen more winning up close than John Salley. Born in Brooklyn, he played at Canarsie High School and Georgia Tech before the Detroit Pistons drafted him in 1986. He went on to win four NBA championships, with the "Bad Boys" Pistons, the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers, and became the first player in NBA history to win titles with three different franchises.
On Monday, April 8, 2024, he sat down for a fireside chat at Gentlemen's Factory, hosted by Gentlemen's Factory and Coach Ted Gustus. In the room: the Bedford Academy High School varsity basketball team, community leaders and Gentlemen's Factory members.
The arrival
The green room
Before the cameras rolled, Salley sat down in the green room with hosts and community leaders for a conversation that was mostly laughter.

The conversation
The young players from Bedford Academy took the front row. Jeff Lindor, founder and CEO of Gentlemen's Factory, opened the program, and then the floor belonged to Salley: a champion's perspective on discipline, teamwork, life after the game and what it takes to win when nobody is watching.

After the conversation
The afternoon ended the best way: a team photo with a four-time champion, followed by handshakes, hugs and pictures with everyone who came.

Why it matters
For a varsity team from Bedford Academy, sitting a few feet from a four-time NBA champion is more than a story to tell. It is proof that the path is real, and a reminder that the habits that win games also build lives. Putting young men in rooms like this one is the heart of the Gentlemen's Factory mission, and of our work with schools and cohorts.
Thank you to John Salley, to Coach Ted Gustus for co-hosting, and to the Bedford Academy varsity team, community leaders and Gentlemen's Factory members who filled the room.
